Copper 2022 is organized by the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas de Chile (IIMCh) in conjunction with 7 other sister societies such as the Instituto de Ingenieros de Minas de Chile (IIMCH); The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (METSOC); Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) and The Minerals; Metals & Materials Society (TMS) of AIME; Gesellschaft der Metallurgen und Bergleute eV (GDMB); The Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ); Nonferrous Metals Society of China (NFSoc); The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) (IIMCh, GDMB, MMIJ, TMS, SME, MetSoc, NFSoc and SAIMM).

«This version will address economic issues, markets, applications, mineral processing, geo-metallurgy, pyro-metallurgy, hydro-metallurgy, electro-metallurgy, sustainability, process optimization through innovation and technologies, waste management and circular economy. You can find more information about Copper 2022 on its website: https://copper2022.cl/», explained Ivan Arriagada, President of Antofagasta Plc and Chairman of the Conference.

He added that Copper 2022 has a very important purpose which is to achieve ideas with impact that contribute to society through mining. «We are working hard to achieve this, as we understand that copper has a very relevant role in modern life and especially in the fight against global warming,» Arriagada said.

The president of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Chile (IIMCh), Sergio Demetrio, highlighted the importance of this meeting for the association. «For our Institute it is an honor to be in charge of developing Copper 2022 in Chile, both for the prestige of mining in our country and its professionals. For being the hosts of the main exponents of the sector at an international level. The Copper conferences originated in 1987 and since then have been held every three years in different countries. The last time it was held in Chile was in 2013 and was attended by more than a thousand industry professionals.»

Therefore, Demetrio invited industry professionals to meet in November and be part of those who will highlight the importance of mining for the challenges ahead and where copper will be the protagonist.

Then, Hans Göpfert, Technical Manager of COPPER 2022 highlighted the importance of the red metal today. «Given the great conditions that copper has, today in the heart of the world’s needs since its contribution is essential to achieve the Energy Transition, from fossil fuels to renewable energy and electromobility. This requires large additional quantities of Cu to make it possible. In other words, it is not possible to materialize the energy transition without the massive use of copper. Copper 2022 is a unique opportunity to discuss, debate and generate valuable ideas about this historic process.

Göpfert also referred to the interest of the exhibitors in participating. «We have received more than 250 papers on topics of interest written by experts from around the world, there will also be five short courses, plenary sessions led by international experts, symposia on the various mining disciplines (pyrometallurgy, geometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, circular economy, waste management and others) and round tables on the role of copper in the Energy Transition, international environmental, social and governance «ESG» criteria, and innovation and technological advances in the copper mining industry,» he said.

It is worth mentioning that the Conference also includes technical visits on the different aspects that today occupy the industry and stakeholders, as well as social activities such as the inaugural cocktail with authorities and executives, a «mining barbecue» and a Gala Dinner. There will also be other activities, such as a business fair for national and international mining suppliers.

Finally, Iván Arriagada, Chairman of the meeting, reiterated the importance of holding this Conference in Chile. «This international meeting is a great opportunity to gather around various topics related to the mining sector and, in particular, for the development of copper. Therefore, I invite you to register and meet in November», concluded Arriagada.
